Is CloudFlare Blocking Your Jetpack Plugin Install?

Is CloudFlare Blocking Your Jetpack Plugin Install? | dianastarts.com

This happened to me, too. Luckily, I was able to get around this in less than five minutes. I thought it may be helpful to share what I did.

What to Do If CloudFlare Blocks Your Jetpack Plugin Install

I had installed Jetpack on one of my blogs already, and the process had gone seamlessly. Since Automattic is the brains behind Jetpack, I expected nothing less. Who better to make a WordPress plugin, right?

When I went to install Jetpack on this blog, I got all the way to the step where you connect to a WordPress.com account. Upon logging in, I got a big nasty CloudFlare error message. I wish I would have taken a screenshot, but you’ve probably seen it before if you have CloudFlare installed on your blog. For some reason, CloudFlare (which is installed on this blog but not the other) was blocking this step from completing.

My initial reaction was to turn CloudFlare off temporarily so I could complete the Jetpack setup. But, I wanted to research this a little more to confirm. User ganiprayoga confirmed my suspicion in this WordPress.org support forum thread and even offered steps to fix it (which I tweaked just a little):

  1. Log into your CloudFlare account.
  2. Go to the Overview tab.
  3. Under your site Status (lower right), click “Advanced”.
  4. Additional options will display. Click on the “Pause” button right under there.
  5. Activate and connect Jetpack.
  6. Return to CloudFlare and resume.

It appears CloudFlare only blocks the initial connection to your WordPress.com account. I was worried it would continue to be an issue, and though I haven’t had Jetpack installed for long, things are going smoothly so far. If you know of a different or better way to fix this, I’d love to hear about it in a comment. I don’t know if what I did is a best practice, but it got the job done quickly and easily.

And in case you’re wondering why I installed Jetpack, I’m considering writing a post about that. Let me know in a comment if this would interest you.
