Since so many of my friends, family, and blog readers ask me for tips about starting a blog, I’m working on some new posts to help you guys out. Not just posts. I’m working on an e-book too! Make that this free 7 day email mini course! As part of the prep for this upcoming content, I’ve been talking to some of you to get your specific questions about starting a blog. One I hear all the time is: Is it too late to start a blog?
While I don’t think anyone definitively knows the answer to this question, I’m happy to share my opinion. Over the last ten years that I’ve been blogging, I’ve had many points in time when I thought it was too late to start a blog.
Blogging in 2006
When I started blogging in 2006, blogging itself was relatively new. While the term “weblog” was coined in 1997, blogs didn’t really take off until the 2000s. While blogging was nowhere in scale of where it is today, many bloggers were pretty well established, even back then. I often wondered if I had started too late to make an impact. Hindsight is 20/20. In a way, I was a bit of an OG blogger. I had no idea how early I had actually started in the grand scheme of things. I wish I hadn’t let the concern of being too late stop me from pursuing blogging with more confidence.
Blogging over the Last 10 Years
It seems like every time I think it’s too late to start a blog, someone does. And while starting something doesn’t say everything, many bloggers who have started after me have become insanely popular. I’m thankful to call many friends, and it’s really inspiring to see how successful they’ve become.
Blogging in 2016
Ten years later, I still don’t think it’s too late to start a blog. If I did, I wouldn’t be revamping this one. I wouldn’t have another blog on the back burner. Seriously, I have the domain purchased and everything.
With Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Quora, LinkedIn, and more, there are many ways to have an online presence. But, it’s important to have a site to tie it all together.
Is It Too Late to Start a Blog?
My answer – no. Go for it!
Though I will say, the days of starting any old randomness are over. It’s more important than ever to come up with a strong approach for your blog AND to share your unique story. I’ll talk more about sharing your story in a future post, but your story and point of view are so important. They’re the only things setting you apart from everyone else talking about the same topic.
You never know who you can reach with a blog. How sharing your story can help someone else and make an impact. I’ve done things with my blog I never would have dreamed possible. Just the other night I went to a blogger dinner in NYC with blog friends I’d met at a conference in Chicago back in 2010. So cool!
How to Start a Blog Today
I’m going to talk more about how to start a blog in some upcoming posts. And as I mentioned, I’m working on an e-book. If you’re interested in starting a blog or know someone who is, I would be most grateful if you could send them my way. Either by sharing one of these posts with them or telling them to email me at diana at dianastarts dot com. I’m currently accepting questions, which I plan to answer in upcoming blog posts or via email reply, depending on the question.
Update: Instead of an e-book, I wrote this free 7 day mini email course on How to Start a Blog. You can sign up here:
I’ve collectively spent months and years of my life doing research on the best blog tools, platforms, and other resources. And I’ve learned quite a bit through trial and error over the last 10 years. Rather than hoarding all of these hard-earned secrets to myself, I want to share them with you. I’ve had lots of help through fellow bloggers, googled blog posts, various books, and other resources, and I have a lot to be thankful for. I’d like to share my tips to pay it forward and help others.
And I guess I don’t see the point in keeping all this great information to myself. Even if you wanted to blog about the exact same thing I am, I think there’s room for all of us to be successful.
